How Often Do I Need to Clean My Hot Tub Filter?

by BlueLagoon / Tuesday, 29 May 2018 / Published in Hot Tubs, Swim Spas
a woman in a hat relaxing in her hot tub in El Dorado, California

When people are looking to relax in their hot tubs in El Dorado, the last thing they want to see is cloudy water. That cloudy water could mean that the filter needs to be cleaned. Not only is nasty water unpleasant, but it could also end up damaging your filter. Keeping your filter clean not only keeps your hot tub inviting, but it can also save you money! But how often should you clean your hot tub or swim spa filter?

You Should Clean Your Hot Tub Filters Every Two to Four Weeks

Every two to weeks is the rule of thumb. Not only will your water be clean, but your filters will last much longer. Clogged or worn out filter don’t trap contaminants as effectively. A clogged filter also puts a heavy strain on the spa’s pumps as well. To avoid clogged or worn out filters, you should:

  • Rinse your filters every two to four weeks.
  • Pre-rinse your filters and soak them overnight in non-foaming, filter cleaning compounds during every water-change (approximately every three to four months). Make sure to rinse the filters again and let them dry before reinstalling them.

You Should Change Your Hot Tub Filters Once per Year

Even if you clean your filter every two-four weeks, it will still have a lifespan of about one year. So change the filters annually or whenever significant wear or damage has occurred!

Keep Your Hot Tub Water Clean

If you water isn’t clean, your filter will require more frequent cleaning, and won’t last as long. Old water with accumulated contaminants won’t clear no matter how much sanitizer you put in. Even the filters themselves won’t be able to do the job well or will wear down or get clogged while doing.

High levels of TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) occur when the water isn’t replaced for more than three to four months. To clean and clear up the water, you’ll have to flush, drain and refill your hot tub.

Minimize Contaminant Levels in Your Hot Tub

Is the water turning cloudy really fast? Even if you’re regularly replacing the water and cleaning the filters, you could be dirtying the water. If your routine introduces excessive amounts of contaminants to the water, you have your work cut out for you. You’ll have to replace the water and clean your filters more often due to this easily avoidable issue. So try to minimize the contaminants you bring in!

Hair and skin products, actual hair and skin, detergents and dirt from daily activities can cloud up the water. Here are some simple steps you can take to prolong the water’s cleanliness and minimize the gunk that gets into the filter:

  • Rinse off lotions, hair sprays, makeup, cosmetics, etc. before entering the hot tub.
  • Keep long hair out of the water as much as possible. Wear a swim cap if necessary.
  • Rinse your swimwear after washing it with detergent.

These simple steps should help keep your hot tub water clean and prolong the life of your filters!
