Could a Hot Tub Help You Sleep Better?

by BlueLagoon / Thursday, 14 December 2017 / Published in Blog, Hot Tubs
Get a Great Night's Sleep in Your Hot Tub in Sacramento

If you find yourself tossing and turning in search of a good night’s sleep, you’re in good company. According to the National Sleep Foundation, millions of Americans suffer from sleep disorders such as insomnia. The good news is that solid sleep may be as close as your own backyard. A nightly soak in the hot tub can do wonders for improving your chance of catching those highly coveted ZZZs. Here’s how owning a hot tub in Sacramento can help you sleep better.

Body Temperature

Your body temperature rises when you’re in the hot tub and quickly begins to drop when you get out. This dip in temperature helps to prepare your body for sleep.

When you go to sleep, your body temperature naturally decreases by one to two degrees Fahrenheit. Your core temperature will be at its lowest point of the day while you sleep. It’s believed that this cool down occurs so that your body can conserve energy.

Soak in your hot tub in Sacramento for 60 to 90 minutes before going to bed to produce this variation in body temperature. Having a cooler core temperature will allow you to experience a deeper, more restful night of sleep.

Relaxation

Hot tubs are renowned for being an amazing way to relax. Spending time in your spa is both mentally and physically calming. Soaking before bed can act as a mild sedative, leaving your body and mind ready for a good night’s sleep. The warm water, buoyancy and jet massage all help decrease your levels of cortisol to reduce stress and anxiety.

Soaking in the hot tub before bed also helps to soothe achy muscles and joints. It provides tension relief and improves circulation. This allows your body to fully relax in preparation for a restful sleep. Relax in your hot tub for one to two hours before bedtime for optimal sleep.

Ideal Soak

Already daydreaming about jumping into the hot tub this evening? Here are some tips for making the most of that p.m. soak.

  • The optimal temperature for therapeutic benefits is between 100-102 degrees Fahrenheit. The water temperature should never exceed 104 degrees.
  • Relaxing in the hot tub one to two hours before bed is most beneficial for improved sleep.
  • Soaking for 15-20 minutes is plenty of time to prepare your body for sleep.
  • Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.
  • Be sure to allow yourself enough time to cool down before turning in. Going to bed too warm can make it harder to fall asleep.
