What Chemicals Should Be Used in a Hot Tub?

What Chemicals Should Be Used in a Hot Tub?

Imagine walking up to your hot tub, prepared to relax, only to remove the cover and find the crystal blue water of your tub turned to a cloudy, icky mess. You’re left to shake your head in frustration and wonder where you went wrong. Having the right hot tub chemicals on hand can help you prevent these sorts of situations and is an important key to being able to safely enjoy your tub and maintain the appearance of your water.

Why Spa Chemicals Matter

Non-organic contaminants, such as sunblock, lotion, or even salt from perspiration can make your hot tub water cloudy and begin to cause chemical imbalances. Debris or even mildew growth can further exacerbate these issues and possibly lead to damage to your equipment or even hot tub-related illnesses.

Have No Fear—Hot Tub Chemicals Are Here!

Using sanitizer chemicals is an easy way to keep your water safe and sparkling. The amount of chemicals you need to add to your tub is dictated by your hot tub’s volume, and should be measured in parts per million (ppm). While you should always consult the manufacturer’s instructions, the following list is a general rule of thumb:

  • Chlorine:

The ideal level is 3 ppm to 5 ppm.

  • Bromine:

If you use granules of this odorless cousin to Chlorine, aim for levels of 3 ppm to 6 ppm. If you instead use tablets, the ideal level is 2 ppm to 4 ppm.

  • Biguanides:

Aim for levels between 30 ppm and 50 ppm.

  • Salt:

Whether you’re using a chlorinator or a brominator, the aforementioned chlorine and bromine levels apply.

  • Minerals:

These types of sanitizers use minerals such as copper or silver to kill bacteria. It’s important to realize that minerals alone won’t completely sanitize your hot tub, and they should be thought of as a supplement to other hot tub chemicals. One bonus of minerals is there ability to allow you to reduce the amount of chlorine or bromine you use- making them a great money saver.

Regular testing is also an important component of successfully using hot tub chemicals, as it’s the only way to ensure you’ve added enough of each chemical to your water. Keep test strips or a liquid test kit on hand to ensure you can easily test whenever necessary, and keep your levels in the appropriate range.
