Hot tubs come in all sorts of purposes, styles, and sizes from small 2-person models to much larger swim or fitness spas. The weight of a hot tub depends on its size. But why, you ask, does one even need to know the weight of their hot tub? Here are two reasons why it is important to know how much a hot tub weighs:
Installing a Hot Tub
Site prep must take place before the hot tub leaves the showroom. Before making arrangements to have your hot tub delivered, you must know its maximum weight so that a proper foundation can be put in place. The maximum weight is the weight of the hot tub when it is to capacity with water and occupants. A maximum weight also takes into account added accessories such as a cover. Whether you are placing it on a concrete slab or on wood or composite decking, the slab or decking has to be constructed strong enough to support the hot tub’s maximum weight.
Moving a Hot Tub
In order to transport a hot tub from one location to another, consideration must be given to the type of trailer or truck that will be needed to carry the hot tub. In addition, you must know how many people and what kind of machinery will be needed to put the hot tub in place. For these reasons, you will need to know the least, or dry, the weight of the hot tub. This is the hot tub’s weight when it is empty.
So How Much Does a Hot Tub Weigh?
To help you get started on some ballpark figures while you are inspecting your deck or patio for suitability, here are the weights of some of our models.
• 2-Person Hot Tub
Our “Dos” model hot tub is a semi-compact 2-person spa. The spa’s dry weight is 200lbs, and it holds 170 gallons of water (at 8.34lbs per gallon). This puts the total weight for the Dos spa with water at only 1,617lbs, making it a perfect choice for a small deck or even a reinforced balcony.
• 4-Person Hot Tub
Our “Cortaro” model is a compact spa that holds 3-4 people. Its dry weight is 350 and it holds 220 gallons of water. Altogether, this puts the weight for a 4-person hot tub at around 2,184lbs. This makes the Caliente the perfect choice for a reinforced deck.
• 6-Person Hot Tub
Weighing in 450lbs for dry weight, and holding 325 gallons of water is our 6-person “Cortez” spa. This 6-person spa weighs a total of 3,160lbs, making it a candidate for a concrete patio.
How to Determine the Exact Weight
Once you have made up your mind to purchase a hot tub, your sales professional can assist you with finding out the weight of your new hot tub. Here are three ways:
- The Manual – An owner’s manual that you receive at the time of purchase or by downloading from a computer will have information about the weight of the hot tub.
- The Pump Compartment – Weight and occupancy specifications are usually found near the pump inside the hot tub’s cabinet.
- Do the Math – One gallon of water weighs approximately 8.3 pounds, and the 2019 average weight of a human being is 194.7. The hot tub’s dry weight plus the total weight of the water plus the total weight of the maximum number of occupants will equal the hot tub’s maximum weight.
