Hot Tub Yoga: Easy Poses to Get Started

Soaking in a hot tub can serve as an oasis from the stress of everyday life, providing a convenient setting to unwind and relax. A hot tub soak not only relieves stress and tension but when paired with yoga exercises, warm water soaks can be beneficial to health and well-being.

New scientific research suggests that many hot tub benefits can be experienced after just 20 minutes of warm water therapy. When combined with the flexibility, strength, and balance training of yoga, users can improve their health while relaxing and enjoying hot tub benefits. Below, we’ll outline a few of the restorative benefits of hot tub yoga.

Health Benefits of Hot Tub Yoga

Comfort and pain relief are two of the most well-known hot tub benefits, with a short soak bringing immediate comfort or pain relief to arthritic knees, hips, or other joints. Additionally, the warm water loosens stiff muscles, providing relief and recovery after workouts or strenuous activity.

When combined with yoga, warm water therapy not only provides these benefits, but is also a low impact solution for increasing flexibility, strength, and balance. The buoyancy of the water relieves gravity and takes the pressure off joints, which is why yoga sessions in your turbo spa remain low impact. The warm water relaxes the muscles, allowing for deeper stretching to be achieved.

Hot tub yoga not only harnesses the power of warm water therapy to bring these benefits, but it also produces an overall feeling of relaxation and well-being. Short 15 to 20-minute sessions are said to positively affect the nervous system in much the same way as meditation.

Hot Tub Yoga: Getting Started

It’s easy to get started practicing yoga in your hot tub. Here are some easy poses to try. As always, consult with your doctor when you start out any new physical regimen:

Tree Pose (Standing)

  1. Stand in your hot tub
  2. Balance on your left leg as you slowly lift your right, bending it at the knee until your right foot comes to rest on your left calf
  3. Gently raise both arms and press palms together in front of your chest
  4. Hold for 15-20 seconds
  5. Repeat on the other side

Crescent Moon Pose (Standing)

  1. Stand with both feet flat
  2. Stretch your arms up, clasping your hands above your head
  3. Bend at the waist to curve to your left, forming a large arc with your body
  4. Hold for 15-20 seconds
  5. Repeat on the other side

Spinal Twists (Seated)

  1. Sit up straight
  2. Stretch both arms out in front, and then wrap your arms around your shoulders (like you are giving yourself a hug)
  3. Gently twist at your waist to the left and look over your left shoulder
  4. Hold for 15-20 seconds
  5. Gently twist at your waist back to the right and look over your right shoulder
  6. Hold for 15-20 seconds
  7. Repeat as desired

Seated Staff Pose (Seated)

  1. Sit up straight
  2. Stretch legs out at 90-degrees
  3. Slowly bend forward at the hips, stretching the hamstrings
  4. Hold for 15-20 seconds
  5. Repeat as desired

Boat Pose (Seated)

  1. Sit up straight
  2. Stretch legs out 90-degrees
  3. Press your hands down on the seat just behind your hips
  4. Lean back slightly
  5. Raise both legs up to a 45-50 degree angle
  6. Stretch out arms in front
  7. Hold for 15-20 seconds
  8. Repeat as desired
